Before they put blu-ray drives in PCs, they had standalone drives that performed to Sony’s industry standards.
With an HDMI cable and a decent HDTV, you shouldn’t notice much difference whether you’re playing from a standalone drive or one build into a PC.
In my own tests, I’ve noticed a 90% correlation in the output quality of both devices.
