Will I tell a difference between an 850 watt home theatre system and a 550 watt system?

I currently have an 850 watt Panasonic surround system that has a pretty good kick when playing a DVD or video game. Not the best when watching regular TV though. I recently purchased a 42" flat panel plasma TV and since my current surround sound does not support HDMI I was thinking of purchasing a new receiver and blu-ray player to get the full effect of the HDTV since I only have a regular DVD player hooked up to it now. My question is this. The only receiver I can find that’s affordable for me is a 550 watt receiver. Will I be able to tell a noticable difference in my current 850 watt receiver and the new 550 watt receiver considering that I’m going from regular TV to HD. How much of a difference will I be able to tell with a lesser powere receiver,or will I?

  1. TV guy says:

First of all, your receiver does not need to support HDMI to use it with your new TV.

Simply connect via digital audio (s/pdif) from either the TV (if you use antenna), the DVD player, or your set-top box, and you will have surround sound.

Regarding the comparison; we need more info.
