Will an HD-DVD disk work in a regular DVD player?

I just bought Star Trek (The original series) Season 1 DVD set. One side of the disk is HD-DVD, the other side is DVD. Neither my DVD player nor my computer will read the HD-DVD side of the disk. I noticed the surface of that side of the disk looks funny. Kinda refracted, like veggie-oil in water. So, are the disk bad, or is HD-DVD a different format?

No. HD-DVD must be played on an HD-DVD player.

It’s not really a different format, but the tracks are recorded more closely together, requiring a finer resolution than a DVD player’s laser can achieve.

If you have an Xbox 360, you might be able to pick up the HD-DVD player designed for it cheaply (about $50). Otherwise, if you don’t want to spring for an obsolete player, you’re stuck with the DVD side.
