Why would the Blu-Ray release of Wizard of Oz be in full screen format?

I just purchased the Blu Ray edition of Wizard of Oz. I noticed the menu and special features are in widescreen format. Why is the movie itself shown pillar boxed, meaning lines on the right and left sides of the screen? Why isn’t the movie taking up the whole screen or simply widescreen and letterboxed? I use a PS3 Blu Ray player. Please help!

  1. Peter D says:

The Wizard of Oz Blu-ray is presented in the same aspect ratio as when it was originally released (1.37). Your HDTV is 1.78, so you will have pillar boxes. You didn’t get a lot of movies with 1.78 aspect ratio until the 50s and 60s.
