The main thing for me with HD-DVD is that it is cheaper to manufacture, which means cheaper for my wallet. Also, the whole size thing is more than moot right now as blu-ray’s first movies will be only 25 GB and rumors saying that they are having major problems with 50 GB pressed Blu-rays, that they haven’t been able to do one out of the lab yet on a massive scale. So the whole size thing is moot. Now with HD-DVD being out, we will start to see more studios jump the fence and make movies for both formats, making the content issue moot also.
On top of it all, HD-DVD has the name. I know it sounds minor, but for non-technical people, it is major. When they are used to seeing DVD, the logical connection with that is HD-DVD, not Blu-ray.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, I have a bad feeling it is going to go like the DVD-A vs SACD war, stale big time, but until then, HD-DVD h as my full support.
It is really too bad Sony is only allowing the $600 version of the PS3 to play Blu-ray movies. I think they shot themself in the foot with that one.
HD-DVD.
