TV can receive 1080i & display 720p, will the quality be much worse if I watch a Blu-Ray disc which is 1080p?
I have a Samsung LE40R72BX (40-inch LCD Television), which I believe does not display in 1080p. I'm about to buy a PS3 and am looking forward to watching some movies on Blu-Ray.
I've seen some BD displays in shops on high-end equipment and the quality is amazing – but will I notice the drop in quality if I watch a BD movie on my TV, which can only do 720 progressive? There seem to be a lot of conflicting opinions, with some people saying that you only notice the difference if your TV is 50 inches or more, and some even saying that the PS3 only outputs at 720p anyway so it isn't an issue. I'd love to know more about this issue.

First off the PS3 can definately output in full 1080p… however I do believe it needs to be through the HDMI connectors. So make sure you use HDMI and not component or SCART (or composite for that matter). With HD, the connection your using can matter ALOT.
Also, FYI you TV displays at 1366 x 768. It may even be listed as 1080i but said resolution is closer to 720i/p. So the question is if your not seeing the Blu-Ray disc at max quality? And would you notice the quality difference if the TV were 1080p? The obvious answer to the first question is yes. As for if you'd notice the difference or not… well that depends somewhat on you, not to mention your set and what set your comparing it to. In general, however, if you had a really good (expensive) 1080p screen and your screen side-by-side… playing the same Blu-Ray…. you should be able to see a difference.. I mean it's twice the resolution afterall.
How much of a difference is hard to say and can even depend on which Blu-Ray disc your watching. The answer I feel more comfortable giving is if it weren't a side-by-side comparison… average Joe public probably wouldn't notice the difference much of the time, between the two resolutions, unless maybe he was specifically looking for it. However, that's not to say those higher end 1080p screens might not also have other things.. like better color reproduction and such… that make them extremely vivid as well. So that being said there's still a chance you'll notice a difference in quality… especially if you sit close to the TV. From far away… there's less of a chance.
As for the Blu-Ray disc displaying blank by default… I'm not so sure about that. I'd think the PS3 would either automatically scale the image back or your TV would take the input and scale it down… but I suppose depending on the equiptment it's possible. HDMI is fairly sophisticated so both pieces of equiptment can be capable of detecting each others capabilities.
Long story short though… I wouldn't sweat it to much. Even if you do notice slightly less quality on your screen, it'll still be significantly better then DVD and an enjoyable movie experience. The PS3 is a very good Blu-Ray player.. so no worries there. Just make sure you connect it online to get the newest firmware/software updates.
