Looking for opinions: Could ability to download movies (think iPod) mean Blu-Ray/HD-DVD debate could be moot?
I was thinking of this when looking at the difference between PS3 and XBox360. Wouldn’t the ability to download movies (or games) be cheaper than anything involving a physical product (where you have the disc, packaging, logistics, etc.)? You can already download TV shows to an iPod-is it such a big leap to movies or games? If something like download time is the limiting factor now, is this likely to change as infrastructure improves, and if so, what time frame would you anticipate?

while you make a good argument, the VAST majority of movie watchers still buy their movies in a physical form. the blu-ray/HD-dvd debate is going to be alive and well for a long time, because the only demographic that downloads things heavily enough to make movie downloads feasible are young people. if the entire country was downloading stuff non stop, then your idea could be plausible.
