There's nothing wrong with the HD-DVD (I figure that's what you mean). Even though the format is dead, it still offers twice the picture quality of HDTV broadcasts (on capable TVs) and completely UNCOMPRESSED digital audio (on capable Home Theaters).
If you look around stores and the web you'll notice most HD-DVD titles have dropped in price by 50%. I'd say buy up all the discs you can on this "dead" format right up until they're 10 for a dollar. Hi-def is still hi-def whether it's "red" or "blue".
But no, unless you own a "Dual-Format" player, you can't do both. Keep your HD-DVD player and pick up a PS3 when they lower the price later this year. There's room at home for both players. Netflix will still rent both formats 'til the end of the year. No worries.
