there is upconvert dvd players that use a hdmi cable. because u use a hdmi cable, that doesn't make a regular dvd into a hd-dvd.
hd-dvd's and blu-ray only play in there respective players, and no others. your plasma will only broadcat a 720p signal if its a 720p tv. in other words, your blu-ray player plays in 1080p, but your tv is 720p, how could your tv broadcast a 1080i or p picture?

I did totally understand by what u put as the question so i'll just try 2 explain all if u have a regular dvd player with a high definition multimedia Input (HDMI) it would seem that it would play HD DVDs but it probably won't U may have to go get a HD DVD player or Blu Ray 4 that matter if the HDMI connection is on your plasma an U hook up your regular dvd player with a regular dvd it will look better but understand it wont be High-Def but by using the the HDMI connect the images will be sharper but not as good as HD DVD's or Blu Ray discs in which with either (HD DVD or Blu Ray) U would have to get the associated player 4 those discs to play an to play at full designated hi-def to save some cash U (in blu ray u might consider a ps3) hope i was able to be of some help
