If I buy an HD TV, do I also need an HD DVD player to watch HD movies properly?

My next TV will be an HD. I want it for viewing HD movies. Does this mean I also need an HD DVD player? And should it be an LCD screen? I'm not looking to hang it on the wall. It actually needs to sit in a corner but definitely flat screen. Any advice and or opinions? Thanks.
Wow! These answers were all awesome! And basically I do indeed need both the TV AND DVD player "HD". That makes sense! Is a plasma an HD TV that just sits on the ground {or stand} then? Thanks everyone!
