While DVDs can be scaled to fit the HD screen and the picture has 1920 x 1080 pixels and is drawn progressively (i.e. 1080p) the DETAIL in the image can't match that of the the same picture recorded in 1080p. The basic problem is you can't put in detail that isn't in the original lower resolution image. See the article at the link for further explanation. Not really.
