After a while, VHS took hold and left Beta in the dust, even though Beta was better quality. The same thing is happening right now between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. I sell TVs and stuff like that for a living, and I never recommend Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Instead, get what is called an "upconverting DVD player" which takes your normal, standard definition DVDs and upgrades the video quality to HD. A decent one will cost around $60. I personally recommend the RCA DRC285, sold at your local Sears. If you can, I'd recommend returning your old player and getting one of these; you won't regret it.
