Your answer is simply NO. Blu-ray players can not play HD DVDS and HD DVD players cannot play blu-ray discs. As far as picture and audio quality goes, it is proven and admitted that blu-ray is better…certainly not by much, and barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but blu-ray does look and sound better. Now it comes down to simply what movies youre looking to purchase and your budget (seeing as certain studios dont release their films on both bluray and hddvd, which sucks). I personally recommend you get that toshiba hddvd layer that upconverts your regular dvds to near-hd quality. the whole "near hd-quality" phrase isnt BS, it really does make your regular dvds look great and its less than $300. A must buy! Blu-ray will probably fail, simply because it sonds too futuristic, and sony’s stabs at future technology have failed time and time again.
