MS has said that HD-DVD will not play a part when it comes to video games on the 360. ALL 360 games will be made on DVD-9, no exceptions. Rockstar wanted to make GTA IV on HD-DVD, but MS told Rockstar that it can’t, so it looks like GTA IV will be on multiple DVD-9 disks.
For MS, it’s a no-lose situation when it comes to HD-DVD. The HD-DVD player is just an add-on, sort of like a luxury item. People who wants to watch HD-DVD movies can get it, and people who don’t want it, don’t have to get it. It doesn’t affect gamers whatsoever. Gamers will get to play all 360 games, whether or not they have the HD-DVD player, so 360 game sales won’t be affected at all. Of course, it could drive developers to stop making games for the 360, but multiple disks isn’t going to cut too much into most developers profit unless the game sells multi-millions. If HD-DVD ends up being the winning format, then MS gets royalties because it’s one of the founding members of HD-DVD.
Absolutely not.
