It’s possible there is a problem with the player, but it’s more likely a setting or cable issue.
Have another look at the instructions and connect up the player using whatever input and output type you have on your receiver. Be sure to seat the plugs correctly. There are also settings to be made in the menu to ensure the right audio stream is used. Try it again. Start with simple analog sound and a composite video connection if you are having a problem, then move up from there.
Firmware is not going to solve a real audio problem. That said, you can do a firmware update manually by going to the Toshiba website and downloading an ISO image (usually Zipped) of the right firmware. (or ask Toshiba to send it to you on DVD). You then burn the ISO image to a DVD and put in the player and enter setup and navigate to the maintenance menu. Follow the instructions in the manual.
A couple of important points. the DVD must be burned using the ‘Burn ISO image" setting of your software … not simply copied to the DVD. Second, be sure not to interrupt the firmware update process once it starts (it takes about 30 min) … you can ruin your DVD player (This is why you shouldn’t update firmware unless there is a feature you need).
