The development of the Blu-ray Disc was by the Blu-ray Disc Association. This group of companies represents consumer electronics, computer hardware and motion picture production. Blu-ray technology was in competition with Toshibas HD DVD technology but in February this year Toshiba announced that it would no longer be developing, manufacturing or marketing HD DVD players and recorders. This left the Blu-ray Disc technology to be the victor of the format war.

Blu-ray has the support of more than 180 world leading consumer electronics, personal computer, video game, music and recording media companies. Seven of the eight movie studios – Disney, Fox, Warner, Sony, Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount, release their movies in Blu-ray format. The first six, exclusively in Blu-ray format.
