BBC iPlayer On The Wii Views
The iPlayer has been durable in the past utilizing the Opera powered web browser channel, but has been of moderate quality and, well, not very cosy to use. Now we have a very unique channel exactly for iPlayer. And it’s been a long time coming – the BBC have been speaking about it for a year and a half.
Even So, I can only assume they’ve worn this time on maturation and screening because the end resolution is outstanding.
The download is immediate and rather packed. It is slick in use (although there is a wait every time you start it) and very rounded. Most importantly, broadcasts are easily to see and, hottest of all, display in full screen without any obvious problems. Counting the Wii only has 512 MB of ram and no hard drive, I believed that loading would suffer and there would be long delays during playback. Throughout the time I had to test it this morn, I didn’t see any such problems.
I directed towards last Saturdays Doc Who episode – it feels great. A itsy-bitsy grainy, but no apparent over compression during fast-paced moving episodes Hey, it’s not high definition quality, but then the Nintendo Wii isn’t an High definition video games console!
In general, I’m bloody impressed. I can see the Wii being used even more straightaway – my wife and I missed a BBC broadcast at the weekend, and will be catching it on the Wii iPlayer this night. Even if you were to mod wii without chip, you could not find a home brew application that equates to this.
