Are Blu-ray discs really better in quality than Standard DVDs when played on the same Blu-Ray Player?

I just bought an HDTV, a PS3 and I bought the movie 300 on Blu-Ray, even though I already owned it on Standard DVD. I was told that watching it on BluRay would be way better than DVD. So I decided to compare them. I watched the same fight scene first on the BluRay in my PS3 and then on the DVD in my PS3…I must say that the quality looks the same to me. I did not see any difference.
I know that BluRay players upscale your standard DVDs to look better but aren’t BluRay discs supposed to be better quality? Especially when they charge you nearly per movie?
Has anyone else noticed this? Has anyone compared the discs on the same Blu-Ray Player?

Yes because it’s like HD channels the only look better on HDTV because my mom has a Visio TV and we don’t have HD channels so it doesn’t look good.So blu-ray disks look better on blu-ray DVD player.not standard.
