Intel is the chip king for speed, but AMD gives a better PERFORMANCE to CASH RATIO.
With that said, the Phenom II 955 should be able to outbench the Q9550 ever so slightly. The Phenom though is extremely is to overclock. If you do overclock the CPU with the multiplier don’t forget to overclock the NORTHBRIDGE because it will make a huge difference as it will become your bottleneck if you don’t. I’d bump it about 600MHz, you may have to add a little extra just to CPU-NB voltage. Don’t OC the HT Multiplier as it doesn’t add much performance gains and just adds to instability issues.
Bother Asus motherboards are great. It really comes down to personal preference. I would just save the money with the Crosshair, so you don’t have to buy a sound card.
You may be even to run the 955 at 3.6GHz without any voltage jump whatsoever. Also, AMD will be keeping AM3 socket for a while, so it probably has a longer life than the Intel socket. Down the road, you will probably be able to drop an AMD Orochi chip in it, which may be stock around 4.0GHz and will be 32nm.
