360 or PS3 if I buy a new console given the circumstances? And anyone know what the prob with my 360 might be?
So my Xbox 360 has audio but no video. I’m suspcting it’s my A/V cable, so I’ve already ordered a HDMI cable but then I tried flicking it to "non-HD" and it still didn’t work. Since HD and non-HD video are different cables (yellow for non-HD as opposed to the green, red and blue) and it still didn’t work, I’m starting to think it might be the console’s problem. Which means I’m going to have to break my bank.
If anyone knows how to fix the problem above then please tell me. Also, I cannot send it back to Microsoft as my warrenty has been voided by modding. Sucks I know, but by doing so I saved a whopping 0 on games (enough to buy an whole new console with some $ leftover).
If I buy a new console, I won’t be modding again because the PS3 cannot be modded and XBL is just too big a part of the 360 experience to give up on. Not to mention I was breaking copyright laws, and isn’t fair to the producers who spent so much time and effort on the games. =P
So from what I’ve established so far, it seems to be a deadlock between the 2 consoles. Here they are:
ONLINE GAMING AND FEATURES:
Yeah, I felt the need to capitalize that. I’ve heard great things about XBL, not so much of PSN. I just wanted to know from you lucky multi-console owners out there, if the difference is actually THAT BIG between the two networks. This along with the game library will be a HUGE factor, so all opinions wanted. =D
Games & Exclusives:
I like the 360 games a little more, and this is a huge point – the console is nothing without great games. I really don’t want to miss out on the ending of the Gears of War series. Aside from a one or two exclusives however, what I like on the 360 can be played on the PS3 as well.
Controller:
The Xbox 360 controller beats Dualshock hands down. I’m playing my PS2 since my 360 is broken, and the 360 controller is a lot more comfortable.
DVD & Blu-Ray playback:
Well… the 360 drops out without a fight here. The PS3 was designed to be a multi-media device with a built-in Blu-Ray player. I won’t be buying a seperate blu-ray player if I choose the 360 because…. heh I’ll be broke from buying the console and the games. So PS3 wins.
Reliability:
Well, my faith in the 360 has obviously taken a beating with this incident. Add it up with the RROD scares, the Sony masterpiece easily comes out victorious.
FINAL SCORE: 2-2
So as you can all see, I’m stuck. I’m leaning towards the 360 at the moment because I already have all the hardware for it (barring the wireless internet adapter). On the other hand, the PS3 is pretty much an all-in-one package and likely will not need any extra hardware (notice I stated that I ordered an HDMI cable to replace my presumably broken A/V cable, so I’ll have it for the PS3 if I buy one).
So tell me any factors I’ve missed out on, and your personal preference. No lousy, one dimensional fanboy responses please.
THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL THOSE WHO BOTHERED TO READ THIS LONG QUESTION AND POST AN ANSWER!
XYZABC,
Tyvm for the thorough answer. I’m not really into shooters at all. First of all, I get the annoying motion sickness when playing FPS games. I’ve never played Halo on my 360 because well… it’s a FPS, and it’s EXTREMELY overrated imo.
With the PS3 being such a future oriented machine, I’m sure PSN will have a lot of time to develope and eventually be on-par with XBL, or even exceed it.
Your answer really kicked me back onto the fence again. I was leaning towards the 360, but now I think I have to reconsider everything from a new point of view.
Thanks!
Thanks for the awesome answer JC, and yeah, modding was worth it. Saved more money than the cost of a whole new console in just 1.5 years.
I guess you’re right on about the 3-2, and how the 360 won the more important factors.

Frankly speaking, for me the difference btw XBL and PSN isn’t much… Not worth 50$ IMO…. The only thing lacking on PSN is cross party chat which might be added in an update. I actually prefer gaming on PSN since the community is much more mature.. You hardly find kids trolling around and passing racist comments like on XBL (I have Halo on my 360 and there are soooo many stupid retard kids there… I mute everyone when I play). Also, M$ doesn’t set dedicated servers which SUCKS!!!! Tell me truthfully while playing Gears 2 online, the game has lagged or not. I have a pretty fast connection and it still lags most times and the match making takes forever (it’s improved now but still)… Trust me, I have played Killzone 2 on PSN with 32 players and with jaw dropping graphics (which frankly blow away any 360 game) and still doesn’t lag…Sony sets dedicated servers for their games which is awesome.
XBL is better I admit, but not worth 50$ annually. PSN is getting better with every update
Secondly, that games part is subjective… I respect your opinion. I personally look for variety cause I am tired of shooters frankly. Hence, I get games like God Of War 3, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1/2…. If you look out for shooters, then PS3 has Killzone 2(which I rate head and shoulder above Halo…. It’s tougher, but really great), Resistance 2, MAG (will support 256 players online)… I admit, Gears is awesome, but I would any day that for Uncharted 2/MGS4…
The 360 is a great machine, but the only problem is the fact that it’s reliability is really an issue… I have 3 meltdowns and the 4th one isn’t showing better signs…
The PS3 on the other hand is a better package overall.. Blu-Ray is the next DVD, you have to adopt it now or in the near future… Sony first party games are awesome… Each game weighs in more than 30GB (40GB-KZ2, 40GB-MGS4)
If I had 299$ now, I would invest it on a PS3 (Slim or old) rather than a 360. 360’s prices will fall down next year and you can buy one then (You can keep the hard drive of current one and then buy an Arcade).
