Right now for the price ps3 is the best. It is already 2.0 compliant. Where most standalone are only ver1.0 that can’t be upgrade. When new movies come out that are ver1.1 your old standalone wont be able to use the pip features but will still play the ordinary way. Ebay is loaded with people getting rid of there obsolete version 1.0 players.
The ps3 is the most logical choice. Most people don’t know but Sony is taking a loss on this unit. The ps3 would have easily cost more than $650 with the specs that it has. Sony took the financial lost on each unit to get it into more homes so Blu-ray would win over the HD-DVD format.
Try to find a Blu-ray standalone that is ver2.0 compliant under $1000.

Up to you, I say for the same price you can play games and play blu-ray discs sounds like a good deal with a PS3. I recommend the PS3.

    PS3, except for 2 things:
    1. Blootooth remote, so you need to buy an additional adapter in you are using a universal remote
    2. No ON/OFF form remote.

Otherwise – it is a great BD player. And a game console. And a media server.

BTW, you can get the $100 cheaper 40gb version, buy a larger internal SATA HD (I got 320gb for $179), and pop it in – you get lots of HD space for music and videos.
