What does a firmware update do on my Panasonic DMPBD30K Blu-Ray player?

Is it really necessary? What is the best way to get these upgrades?

It lets you play with new features added to some movies and also if you don’t get it some movies will not be able to play on your machine though the discs should have updates in them too this maynot always be the case. It makes it harder to pirate movies and that is why they update the disc versions (bluray 1.3 or 2.0…)
    get it from the panasonic site copy to a usbdrive on your computer and then plug the usb drive to your player, select firmware update and voila.
