Blu-ray disc

What is a blu-ray disc?

The name Blu-ray Disc comes from the blue-violet laser that is used to read and write to this type of disc. The disc is also referred to as BD.

A Blu-ray disc is an optical disc storage media format. Used mainly for high definition video and data storage the disc is the same size as your normal DVD or CD but offers more than 5 times the storage capacity. The dual layer Blu-ray Disc has the capacity to store 50GB which is nearly 6 times the amount of the dual layer DVD. It has the ability for greater storage because of it’s shorter wave length, 405 nm than the normal DVD format that uses a red 650 nm laser. The shorter wave length allows for greater precision and because data is packed more tightly you are able to fit more on a disc compared to the conventional DVD CD, even though they are the same size. There was also a change of the numerical aperture to 0.85. that enables the Blu-ray Disc to hold more.
